Mali and I went to Amsterdam! Here's the houseboat where we stayed for our weeklong visit. It's located right HERE in the Jordaan district.
About the size of a small hotel room, it had everything we needed - a kitchen, a bed, a tiny bathroom, and proximity to just about all of
the sites we wanted to explore.
The Tulip Museum. We were in Amsterdam just in time for the tulips to be in full bloom... and they were EVERYWHERE.
Walking by the shops in Jordaan on our way to...
THE RED LIGHT DISTRICT!
I spun a few records at Red Light Radio, a station set up inside a former prostitution window. It's right across the alley from Oude Kerk, the oldest church
in Amsterdam (see the big red door through the window?), and smack dab inbetween some of the city's infamous red light windows.
Thanks to Steven de Peven for letting me play on his show!
Let's try some of those famous french fries in a paper cone, shall we? Don't forget the mayo!
Mali opted for the small size. I got the large, pictured at right.
Hello kitty.
Mali at the entrance to our houseboat. Mind your head!
We began our next day with a walk to Rijksmuseum. This enormous palace houses some truly incredible classic Dutch paintings.
The piece de résistance is Rembrandt's enormous Night Watch.
We are Amsterdam!
Amsterdam's famous sign as seen from behind.
Pannenkoeken met spek en stroop!
Along the Amstel River.
Cool doors, bro.
Albert Cuypmarket, a daily street-long fair of local vendors selling fresh produce, fish, clothes, and most importantly...
STROOPWAFELS!
The stylish logo for Albert Heijn, Amsterdam's big grocery chain. We probably went here about 6 times during our trip to stock up on food for the
houseboat, pick up a quick meal, or grab some snacks. The stores are tiny and have just about everything you'd need without the excess of American
grocery supermarkets.
"Make your dog do his business in the gutter, not on the sidewalk."
We rode our bikes down to Vondelpark. This arrangement of hexagonal shrubs was kinda cool.
Mali and our friend Liselotte on their bikes.
Fish market in De Pijp district. Look at that spread!
Mali trying to decide what to order...
How about raw herring with onion and pickles? It's Amsterdam's signature dish.
We settled on fried cod. Go Netherlands!
The view from on top of our houseboat.
Would you like to go for a little ride?
Riding our bikes through Westerpark in search of windmills.
Sneaking a peek at the private gardens hidden across from Westerpark. This was as close to Snow White's village as real life gets. I think we saw a Hobbit.
