Liselotte's partner Harm took us out on a boat ride to explore Amsterdam through its many canals and waterways. He owns a former rescue boat from
a vintage oil tanker. It's bright orange - can't go wrong with that.
Perfect weather for a boat ride.
Ooooooooooooh.
Yep!
We came across this super slick houseboat on the Amstel River and then Mali found some info about it online.
Bridges & bridges & bridges & bridges.
Liselotte and brand new baby girl Feline! That's Feh-LEEN, not FEE-line.
Mother Goose.
Some of the houses in our neighborhood.
I invented and then became obsessed with a snack on this trip. First, take two stroopwafels (we like the Albert Heijn brand).
Cover one side with Nutella and the other side with peanut butter.
BOOM. I explained this to a bunch of locals and none of them thought it sounded good. They may dip their fries in mayo, but the combination of
peanut butter and nutella is apparently unheard of.
We went to Noordermarkt, a weekly flea market / swap meet outside Noorderkerk (the Northern church) each Friday morning. It's a great place to check out
vintage Dutch clothes, books, postcards, kitchenware, and more.
Our good friend Brendan told us we HAD to meet up with his friend Pooja, a local filmmaker and music lover who he had befriended while coming through
Amsterdam on tour over the last few years. We met her for lunch at Warung Marlon, a Surinamese restaurant, where she told us about some of the cool film projects she
had been working on and got us caught up on local politics and such.
Mali
had some kind of noodle soup with an egg in it.
I went for stewed beef and vegetables. We also split some chicken satay and fried bananas with a peanut sauce. One of the best meals we had in town!
Of course Mali stopped to look at Birkenstocks. DUH.
We stopped by the studio of Stefan Glerum, a local graphic artist who I've been emailing with for years. It was great to finally meet this incredibly
talented artist and trade some prints with him.
Two of Stefan's prints. Everything is hand-drawn with a fountain pen and then often colored in on the computer.
One of Stefan's alphabets.
Thanks Stefan!
We made breakfast with salmon from Albert Cuypmarket, eggs and leeks from Albert Heijn, and cheese from a local cheese shop.
Best watertowers I've ever seen - en route to Keukenhof, a giant flower garden located about 30 minutes West of Amsterdam in Lisse.
Hyacinths at Keukenhof.
Lots of flowers.
Mali loves flowers!
Liselotte and Feline hiding out under a flowering tree.
Smoochin' up on a windmill... with stroopwafel in hand.
Those red flowers were like... REALLY RED!
OPTICAL ILLUSIONZ!
Tons and tons of tulips.
After Keukenhof, we rode our bikes to meet up with Harmen Liemburg at his screenprinting studio. I first met Harmen when he was a faculty-in-residence
at MCAD a couple of years ago. He brought his screenprinting class by our print shop and we've kept in touch since then. It was great to see his own studio
where he designs and prints his HUGE posters.
Some of Harmen's work, including a print based on a proposed birth announcement postage stamp design.
Harmen signing one of his bright fluorescent prints for me. Thanks!
On our final full day in Amsterdam, we walked to Anne Frank House. It was chilling to walk through the actual house where Anne Frank and her family
hid out during World War II.
"I'll make my voice heard, I'll go out into the world and work for mankind!"
Outside Anne Frank House.
Then we walked to Postzegelmarkt, a weekly market of old folks selling stamps and old coins. This is the really laid back version of a record convention.
I came up on a ton of stamps that I'll be sharing on my design & stamp blog, so stay tuned!
Picking out some '70s Dutch stamps from one of the dealers.
